Quitting Drinking On Your Own

I can’t stop drinking, and can only go a day without it if I’m hungover. Yesterday, I put away over half a bottle of wine, two cocktails, and two beers all within a three and a half hour period.

Alcohol depresses the functions of our brains – this is why drinking late at night often leads to us falling asleep more quickly than ever. To really begin my sober journey, I had to first do a ‘social cleanse’ and find out which friends wanted me as just the party girl, and who wanted me as a genuine friend. At some point I would inevitably reveal I wasn’t quite who I said I was and it meant having to move around so I wasn’t shown to be a fraud. It was at that point I knew things had to change. I knew a lot of party people but had no solid friendship groups. I began to develop a big problem with compulsive lying when I was drunk.

Should You Quit Alcohol Altogether Or Moderate Instead?

I’m Worried About My Drinking, Or Someone Else’s

Once I was the hot mess throwing up on the new carpet, heckling bemused seminar tutors when I’d show up to a 9am tutorial still wasted, or flirting with their parents, siblings, and anyone with a pulse. I was the one who took it too far so that their common-or-garden drunken behaviour could go unnoticed. And suddenly, the irresponsible one could hold everyone else accountable for their actions. I thought back regretfully to the times I’d pressured my friends to drink and realised that it was never because I thought quitting drinking on your own they were boring when sober. If anything, I was concerned they would judge my drunken antics and find my drunken conversation childish and dull. From the sober side of the coin, you realise that the level of alcohol in your system doesn’t correlate to how fun you are as a person.
